Considering the Mundane aka Appreciating Albuquerque Mission

So this is an idea I had perculating in my brain during the meeting, but I'm rather bad at putting things into words so I had to let it evolve enough to share.

The basic idea is to do an Invisible Theatre piece where a small group of tourists are interested in something totally mundane but uniquely Albuquerque.

The idea comes from the fact that while I was abroad, my "foreign" friends and I would get super excited over things that natives would never glance at twice (things like fancy or weird toilets, sidewalks, etc.). It sounds weird but it's true. Also, I feel that there's a lot of negative feelings towards the city by a lot of the natives (myself included) and if we could point out cool things that people never acknowledge that would at least encourage a few people to open their eyes a bit more.

So here's a few things I'd like to toss out:

  • Who speaks any sort of foreign language? (In my mind I see this mission happening in a foreign language with an "inturpretor" since that's how it always happened when I was abroad..though of course this isn't necessary - we could use some Queen's English or just no accents at all...what do you guys think?)
  • What things do you think are cool around the city but people don't acknowledge?
  • Does this mission even make sense? Feedback? Any ideas to make it better

To answer my own questions a bit, I speak Japanese and could possibly stumble through some simple Spanish (with a convincing accent though my grammar is bad).

The one thing that's popping to mind about cool things in the city is those wire statues by a bus stop on San Mateo and Zuni. However, I need a lot of help thinking of other things.

Sorry this was so long. Much love to anyone who stumbled through this with me. (^_^) <3

Re: Considering the Mundane aka Appreciating Albuquerque Mission

I friggin' love this idea.  I want to be a part of it.

Here's some of my initial ideas:

--My personal favorite way to handle the language thing is to pick a language to try and emulate in terms of phonics and sounds, but make it up (AKA Jibberish, but in a way that sounds legitimately foreign)

Some potential things to get psyched on:

-The random things that are covered in neon lights and bridge over parts of nob-hill

-The arrow at the Whole Foods parking lot on Carlisle

-The Frontier (or any component therein)

-Wal Mart (more American than ABQ specific though)

-The statues in front of the Hyatt downtown

-The Lobo statue at University and Central

-The big concrete baseball at Isotopes park

...more to come i'm sure.  Populated places would be ideal.

Also great if we had cameras and camcorders with us, we could do poses with the items/locations in question.  'Tourist' clothing could be fun too.

Awesome Ewen! I love the arrow! That's totally the kind of thing I was thinking of. When I first moved to Albuquerque I thought it was the craziest and coolest thing ever and now I never think about it.

I think this is a great idea!  I am a native who happens to love her home town!  Wierd, I know!  I am definitely in and I will be thinking of some real touristy spots like Old Town or Rout 66 (Downtown Central) etc.

So do we want real facts for this, or made-up facts?
