Al Payaso Le Gusta...

Dancing on the periphery of the dominant theatrical paradigm, the contemporary clown contests the authority of the text and celebrates the capacity of the body to transmit knowledge and meaning.  The pedagogy of the physical comic is based in total presence and dilation, challenging the expectations and norms of physicality with a constant awareness of the inexhaustible possibility - and inherent absurdity -of the moment.  With exploration as his/her imperative, the clown navigates the territory between ontological and epistemological discoveries, establishing solidarity with the audience and asking for their empathetic participation in the journey from confusion to certitude and back again.

"Al Payaso Le Gusta" was developed by members of The Street Theatre Brigade through collaborative investigations of embodied expression, using contemporary clown as a performative mode and combining elements of the Brigade's repertoire of street performances. Four clowns with tricks up their sleeves and one large dollar bill create this part-choreographed, part-improvised piece exploring desire, power, physicality, musicality, the relationship between word and image, and (above all) comedy.  Performances for young audiences are often accompanied by an interactive workshop in beginning clown technique.  "Al Payaso Le Gusta" has been performed at

-the UNM Hospital's Arts-In-Medicine Concert Series

-the Revolutions International Theatre Festival Reptilian Lounge

-the ReAct Fundraiser for Arts in the Schools

-Lew Wallace, East San Jose, Dolores Gonzales and Bandelier Elementary Schools as part of the National Hispanic Cultural Center's Artes los Martes outreach program.
